Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraMatsyārdha (मत्स्यार्ध) refers to “one part of (the country) Matsya”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 16) (“On the planets—graha-bhaktiyoga”), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “[...] Jupiter presides over the eastern part of the Indus, the western half of Mathurā, the countries of Bharata and Sauvīra; the town of Srughna, the province of Udīcya, the Vipāśā and the Śatadru rivers; the countries of Ramaṭha, Śālvā; Traigarta, Paurava, Ambaṣṭa, Pārata, Vāṭadhāna, Yaudheya, Sārasvata, Arjunāyana, one half of Matsya; [...]”.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
