A stone stool (石凳子 [shi deng zi]) or stone platform (石臺子 [shi tai zi]) used for convenient mounting and dismounting of horses. In ancient times, prominent households (大戶人家 [da hu ren jia]) often placed them on both sides of their main gates.
From Chapter 18 of Journey to the West (《西遊記 [xi you ji]》): "You two elders, please take a brief seat on the horse mounting platform while I go in and inform the master."
From Chapter 68 of The Plum in the Golden Vase (《金瓶梅 [jin ping mei]》): "Meanwhile, the large white horse was led out, the saddle (替子 [ti zi]) was placed on, the bridle (嚼環 [jue huan]) was fastened, and stepping on the horse mounting platform, he mounted with a leap."
