General definition (in Hinduism)
Source: archive.org: Vedic index of Names and SubjectsMaṭacī (मटची) occurs in a passage of the Chāndogya Upaniṣad, where reference is made to the Kurus being overwhelmed by Maṭacīs. Śaṅkara interprets the word by “thunderbolts” (aśanayaḥ), while Ānandatīrtha in his commentary gives, as an alternative rendering, pāṣāṇa-vṛṣṭayaḥ—i.e., “hailstones”, which may be the sense. The Śabdakalpadruma, agreeing with Ānandatīrtha, says that Maṭacī means “a kind of small red bird” (rakta-varṇa-kṣndra-pakṣi-viśeṣa, reading -pakṣī-), and Jacob suggests that the “locust” is meant.

Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
