Source: Wisdom Library: Skanda-puranaMāsamāhātmya (मासमाहात्म्य) or “glorification of certain months” is a part of vrata section of the Hindu Dharma-śāstra. Certain vratas (religious observances) are prescribed for certain months and the importance of the vratas is emphasized by glorifying the particular month.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
