Maḥmūd of Ghaẓnī (= Gajjaṇavai) is mentioned in the Vividhatīrthakalpa by Jinaprabhasūri (13th century A.D.): an ancient text devoted to various Jaina holy places (tīrthas).—In the year 1024, Gajjaṇavaī (Maḥmūd de Ghaẓnī) sacked Gujarat and, on the way back, saw the temple of Mahāvīra in Satyapura.—The date of 1024 given by Jinaprabha suggests that it is about the expedition of Maḥmūd of Ghaẓnī against Somanātha, which historians place between 1023 and 1027 ( Nāzim 1931 p. 214) - most generally in 1024-1025 -: cf. Struggle for empire 1966 ( 1 1957) p. 19 and 23 n. 11, AHI 1963 ( 1 1946) p. 183.
