Source: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesMahasangitika or Mahasanghika.—Originally they had only two divisions the Ekabboharikas and Gokulikas (Rockhill, op. cit., 182ff). Their separation from the orthodox school was brought about by the Vajjiputta monks, and was probably due to difference of opinion on the ten points (for these see Vin.ii.294f) held by the Vajjiputta monks.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
