Mahānīlī (महानीली) is a variety of Nīlī: a medicinal plant possibly identified with Indigofera tinctoria Linn. (“true indigo”), according to verse 4.80-85 of the 13th-century Raj Nighantu or Rājanighaṇṭu.
nīlī is mentioned as having seven synonyms: Amalā, Rājanīlikā, Tutthā, Śrīphalikā, Melā, Keśārhā and Bhṛśapatrikā.
Properties and characteristics: “Mahānīlī is richer in properties than Nīlī. Its actions too are better than the latter. It is better in colour (Raṅgaśreṣṭhā) and accelerates spermatogenesis”.
