馬蒂斯 [mǎ dì sī] [ma di si]—
A personal name (人名 [ren ming]). (1869-1954 AD) A French painter (法國畫家 [fa guo hua jia]) and sculptor (雕刻家 [diao ke jia]), a leading figure (領袖人物 [ling xiu ren wu]) of Fauvism (野獸派 [ye shou pai]). His early works were deep and somber. After coming into contact with Impressionist theory (印象主義理論 [yin xiang zhu yi li lun]), and through his study, research, and critique, he established a unique creative style (創作風格 [chuang zuo feng ge]). From then on, his painting style (畫風 [hua feng]) shifted towards bright and vibrant colors. In 1905 AD, he participated in the French Autumn Salon exhibition (法國秋季沙龍展 [fa guo qiu ji sha long zhan]) with a group of young painters. Due to the rough brushstrokes (筆觸 [bi chu]) and bold, vivid use of color (用色 [yong se]) in his paintings, he was compared by critics to "wild beasts" (野獸 [ye shou]). From then on, he became the leader (領導人物 [ling dao ren wu]) of Fauvism (野獸派 [ye shou pai]). Throughout his life, his creative output (創作 [chuang zuo]) was prolific, with famous works (作品 [zuo pin]) including "Woman with a Hat" (戴帽子的女人 [dai mao zi de nu ren]). Also translated as "Matisse" (馬諦斯 [ma di si]) or "Matisse" (馬蒂塞 [ma di sai]).
