鏤空 [lòu kōng] [lou kong]—
To carve or engrave patterns (圖案 [tu an]) or characters (文字 [wen zi]) that penetrate an object (物體 [wu ti]). It is often used for window lattices (窗格 [chuang ge]), folding screens (屏風 [ping feng]), clothing (服飾 [fu shi]), jade articles (玉器 [yu qi]), etc. In Chapter 11 of Sequel to Water Margin (《水滸後傳 [shui hu hou chuan]》): "Those two eyes, their pupils (烏珠 [wu zhu]) were dug out, as big as a bushel measure (巴斗 [ba dou]). Yue He (樂和 [le he]) said: 'Hollow them out and use them as crystal lamps (水晶燈 [shui jing deng]); light a fire (點上火 [dian shang huo]) inside, and they will be bright and beautiful (瑩亮好看 [ying liang hao kan]).'" In Chapter 26 of The Precious Mirror of Judging Flowers (《品花寶鑑 [pin hua bao jian]》): "The windows (窗子 [chuang zi]), railings (欄杆 [lan gan]), screen doors (屏門 [ping men]), and similar items in the room were all meticulously crafted (工細 [gong xi]) with openwork landscape (山水 [shan shui]) designs. Their figures (人物 [ren wu]) were finely carved (細細雕成 [xi xi diao cheng]) from precious gems (珍寶 [zhen bao]) and inlaid (嵌上 [qian shang]), virtually transforming them into jade pillars (瑤楹 [yao ying]) and jade beams (玉棟 [yu dong])."
