Lokavid (लोकविद्) is a synonym for the Buddha according to the 2nd century Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra (chapter IV). Why is he called Lou kia pai (Lokavid)? Loka means world and vid means to know. The expression “Lokavid” thus means “Knower of the world”.

According to the Visuddhimagga:—“The Buddha knows the world of the formations (sankhāraloka), the world of beings (sattaloka) and the world of space (okāsaloka) with all their subdivisions”.
