柳宗元 [liǔ zōng yuán] [liu zong yuan]—
Person's name. (773–819 AD) Courtesy name Zihou (子厚 [zi hou]), a native of Hedong (河東 [he dong]) (present-day Yongji County (永濟縣 [yong ji xian]), Shanxi Province (山西省 [shan xi sheng])), hence also known as "Liu Hedong" (柳河東 [liu he dong]). A Tang Dynasty (唐代 [tang dai]) literary figure. He obtained the jinshi (進士 [jin shi]) degree during Emperor Dezong's (德宗 [de zong]) Zhenyuan (貞元 [zhen yuan]) reign and served as Censor (監察御史 [jian cha yu shi]). Later, he was demoted to Sima (司馬 [si ma]) of Yongzhou (永州 [yong zhou]) and further demoted to Prefect (刺史 [ci shi]) of Liuzhou (柳州 [liu zhou]), hence also known as "Liu Liuzhou" (柳柳州 [liu liu zhou]). He was a key leader of the Tang Dynasty (唐代 [tang dai]) Ancient Prose Movement (古文運動 [gu wen yun dong]). His poetry and prose excelled at depicting landscapes (山水 [shan shui]), reflecting reality, with a fresh and sharp style. His collected works include Liu Hedong Ji (柳河東集 [liu he dong ji]), Longcheng Lu (龍城錄 [long cheng lu]), etc.
