六舟 [liu zhou]—"Six Boats" — [Metaphor] Boats are used as a metaphor (譬喻 [pi yu]) for the Six Pāramitās (六波羅蜜 [liu bo luo mi]), because "Pāramitā" (波羅蜜 [bo luo mi]) is translated as "reaching the other shore" (到彼岸 [dao bi an]). The preface to A Guide to the Three Teachings (三教指歸 [san jiao zhi gui]) by Yun Chang states: "Six boats connect stern to stern, three chariots (三駕 [san jia]) divide the reins."

六舟—【譬喻】以舟譬六波羅蜜。因波羅蜜譯言到彼岸也。三教指歸運敞序曰:「六舟接艫,三駕分轡。」
