六術 [liu shu]—(liù shù) — [Glossary entry] These are the six types of heterodox schools (外道 [wai dao]) from India (天竺 [tian zhu]). The preface to the Guang Hongming Ji (廣弘明集 [guang hong ming ji]) states: "The six heterodox schools flourished during the Buddhist era (佛代 [fu dai]), and the Three Zhangs (三張 [san zhang]) encroached upon the flow of Dharma (法流 [fa liu])."

1. Six methods of creating Chinese characters (中國文字 [zhong guo wen zi]). Namely, pictographs (象形 [xiang xing]), ideograms (指事 [zhi shi]), associative compounds (會意 [hui yi]), picto-phonetic characters (形聲 [xing sheng]), mutually explanatory characters (轉注 [zhuan zhu]), and phonetic loans (假借 [jia jie]). See Xu Shen's (許慎 [xu shen]) "Preface to Shuowen Jiezi" (說文解字序 [shuo wen jie zi xu]) from the Han (漢 [han]) Dynasty, with annotations by Duan Yucai (段玉裁 [duan yu cai]) of the Qing (清 [qing]) Dynasty. Also known as "Liu Ti" (六體 [liu ti]).
2. Six types of script during Wang Mang's (王莽 [wang mang]) reign. Namely, ancient script (古文 [gu wen]), unusual characters (奇字 [qi zi]), seal script (篆書 [zhuan shu]), Zuo script (左書 [zuo shu]), Miao script (繆書 [mou shu]), and bird-worm script (鳥蟲書 [niao chong shu]).
