六神通 [liu shen tong]—The Six Supernatural Powers — [Term/Definition] 'Shén' (神 [shen]) means 'unfathomable' or 'unpredictable'; 'Tōng' (通 [tong]) means 'unhindered' or 'unimpeded'. Sages of the Three Vehicles (三乘 [san cheng]) attain six kinds of wisdom that are mysterious, unfathomable, unhindered, and free. These are called the Six Supernatural Powers, or simply the Six Powers (六通 [liu tong]). The Parable Chapter (譬喻品 [pi yu pin]) of the Lotus Sutra (法華經 [fa hua jing]) states: "Possessing the Threefold Knowledge (三明 [san ming]) and the Six Supernatural Powers."
