臨濟真人 [lin ji zhen ren]—Linji the True Person — [Kōan]
Linji ascended the hall and said, "Within this mass of red flesh (赤肉團 [chi rou tuan]), there is a True Person of No Rank (無位真人 [wu wei zhen ren]), who constantly enters and exits through the face-gate of you all. Those who have not yet witnessed it, look!"
At that time, a monk stepped forward and asked, "What is the True Person of No Rank?"
The Master descended from the Zen seat (禪床 [chan chuang]), grabbed him and said, "Speak! Speak!"
The monk hesitated.
Linji pushed him away and said, "What is this True Person of No Rank, a dry shit-stick (乾屎橛 [gan shi jue])?" Then he returned to the abbot's quarters (方丈 [fang zhang]).
