糧草 [liáng cǎo] [liang cao]—
Food (糧食 [liang shi]) and fodder (草料 [cao liao]) for the men (軍中人 [jun zhong ren]) and horses (馬 [ma]) in the army. From Chapter 7 of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (《三國演義 [san guo yan yi]》): "Yuan Shao (袁紹 [yuan shao]) had his troops stationed in Henei (河內 [he nei]), but was short of provisions. Han Fu (韓馥 [han fu]), Governor of Jizhou (冀州牧 [ji zhou mu]), sent people to deliver grain to supply military needs." From Chapter 39 of "The Scholars" (《儒林外史 [ru lin wai shi]》): "Lead two hundred soldiers (兵 [bing]), each carrying a bundle of dry bamboo (枯竹 [ku zhu]) hidden on their person. Go to a secluded place west of their city, climb up the city wall, and set fire to the place where their provisions are stored." Also known as "糧秣 [liang mo]" (liáng mò).
