糧不繼日 [liáng bù jì rì] [liang bu ji ri]—
Food supplies (糧食 [liang shi]) were critically scarce, making it impossible to sustain ourselves. From Chapter 43 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三國演義 [san guo yan yi]》): "Indeed, even with incomplete armor and weapons (甲兵 [jia bing]), unsecured city walls and fortifications (城郭 [cheng guo]), untrained troops (軍 [jun]), and provisions (糧 [liang]) that would not last for days, yet at Bowang (博望 [bo wang]) we burned their camps, and at Baihe (白河 [bai he]) we used water (to defeat them), causing Xiahou Dun (夏侯惇 [xia hou dun]), Cao Ren (曹仁 [cao ren]), and their like to be utterly terrified. I humbly submit that the military strategies of Guan Zhong (管仲 [guan zhong]) and Yue Yi (樂毅 [le yi]) might not have surpassed this."
