禮士親賢 [lǐ shì qīn xián] [li shi qin xian]—
People of high status (有地位者 [you de wei zhe]) should respect (尊禮 [zun li]) talented and knowledgeable individuals (有才識的人 [you cai shi de ren]) and associate closely with (親近 [qin jin]) virtuous people (有賢德者 [you xian de zhe]). From Act 3 (第三折 [di san zhe]) of 'Appreciating Chrysanthemums by the Eastern Fence' (東籬賞菊 [dong li shang ju]) in 'Rare Editions of Yuan and Ming Dynasties Zaju Plays' (孤本元明雜劇 [gu ben yuan ming za ju]): "Respect scholars (禮士 [li shi]) and befriend the virtuous (親賢 [qin xian]), eagerly seeking them out; use humble words (卑辭 [bei ci]) and condescend to visit (枉駕 [wang jia]) to meet with literati (儒流 [ru liu])." Also known as 'lǐ xián xià shì' (禮賢下士 [li xian xia shi]).
