離婆多 [li po duo]—Revata—【Person's Name】Revata, also known as 梨婆多 [li po duo] (Lí Pó Duō), 離越 [li yue] (Lí Yuè), or 離曰 [li yue] (Lí Yuē). He is the name of an Arhat (羅漢 [luo han]). The correct transliteration is Kṣetrevaḍa (頡隸伐多 [xie li fa duo]). He is also the name of the Chamber asterism (室宿 [shi su]) among the Twenty-Eight Mansions (二十八宿 [er shi ba su]). He was a son obtained by praying to the stars. Alternatively, he was named "False Combination" (假和合 [jia he he]). He encountered two ghosts fighting over a corpse, and realizing the principle of the human body being a "false combination," this became the cause and condition for him to leave home (become a monk) and attain enlightenment.
Fahua Wenju (法華文句 [fa hua wen ju]), Vol. 2, states: "Revata is also called Li Yue (離越 [li yue]). This translates to 'constellation' (星宿 [xing su]) or 'Chamber asterism' (室宿 [shi su]), or 'false combination' (假和合 [jia he he]). The Mañjuśrī-paripṛcchā Sūtra (文殊問經 [wen shu wen jing]) says he constantly made sounds; his parents begged for a son from the stars, and since they obtained him through this prayer, he was named after the stars."
Xuanying Yinyi (玄應音義 [xuan ying yin yi]), Vol. 6, states: "Revata, according to the Mañjuśrī-paripṛcchā Sūtra (文殊問經 [wen shu wen jing]), translates to 'Chamber star' (室星 [shi xing]), which is a northern asterism. He was obtained by worshipping it, and thus named after it. The correct pronunciation is Kṣetrevaḍa (頡隸伐多 [xie li fa duo]); in the sutras, it is written as 梨婆多 [li po duo] (Lí Pó Duō) or 黎離多 [li li duo] (Lí Lí Duō), which are errors. This is the Revata mentioned in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra (首楞嚴經 [shou leng yan jing]) as foremost in sitting meditation. The pronunciation of 頡 [xie] (xié) is like 'xian jie qie'."
