雷電 [léi diàn] [lei dian]—
1. Clouds (雲層 [yun ceng]) in the sky are usually charged. If a cloud (雲層 [yun ceng]) approaches an object on the ground, or two clouds (雲層 [yun ceng]) with opposite charges approach each other, a spark discharge phenomenon will occur due to induction. This is called "lightning" (閃電 [shan dian]). Lightning (閃電 [shan dian]) generates high heat, causing the surrounding air to rapidly expand due to the heat, producing a very loud sound. This is called "thunder" (雷 [lei]). The two combined are called "thunder and lightning".
2. An analogy for immense power/might (威勢強大 [wei shi qiang da]). From Strategies of the Warring States: Qi 1 (《戰國策 [zhan guo ce].齊策一 [qi ce yi]》): "The king's (王家 [wang jia]) army's (兵 [bing]) speed is like a pointed arrow (錐矢 [zhui shi]), their battle (戰 [zhan]) is like thunder and lightning, and their dispersal (解 [jie]) is like wind and rain (風雨 [feng yu])." Annotation by Gao You (高誘 [gao you]) of the Han (漢 [han]) Dynasty: "Thunder and lightning symbolizes great might (威大 [wei da])."
