Lakṣaṇaśāstra (लक्षणशास्त्र).—This śāstra or system of knowledge became known as “the śāstra belonging to Samudra” (sāmudrikaśāstra), from which “the śāstra of the lines” (lekhāśāstra), or palmistry eventually derived, although in the beginning the two were combined. The earliest remnants of the system indicate that there was a conscious employment of numbers in connection with part of the body probably as a mnemonic device used in learning the human anatomy.
