來頓瓶 [lái dùn píng] [lai dun ping]—
An early electrical capacitor. It originated from the discovery by Dutch physicist Musschenbroek (穆申布魯克 [mu shen bu lu ke]) (Pieter van Musschenbroek) during his research at Leiden University (來頓大學 [lai dun da xue]) in 1746, hence it is named the Leyden jar. Its structure involves attaching tin foil to both the inner and outer surfaces of a glass bottle, covering about five-eighths of the bottle's height. A metal rod is inserted through the stopper, with a metal sphere at its upper end and a metal chain attached to its lower end, the chain making contact with the inner tin foil. If an object with positive electricity (陽電 [yang dian]) is connected to the metal sphere, positive electricity (陽電 [yang dian]) will be accumulated on the inner tin foil of the bottle. Experiments can prove its capacitance and discharge effect. It is also translated as Leyden jar (來登瓶 [lai deng ping]) or Leyden jar (來丁瓶 [lai ding ping]).
