The Laghujātaka-sūtra (in Sanskrit, with Vṛtti) is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—There are 12 chapters, which are clearly marked in the manuscript by internal colophons. [...] Thee Laghujātaka-sūtra is a classic work by the astronomer Varāhamihīra. But in the chapter-colophons found at the end of chapter 1, 2, 4 and 5 Bhaṭṭotpala is given as the author.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
