拉纜子擺渡 [lā lǎn zi bǎi dù] [la lan zi bai du]—
A method of crossing a river (渡河 [du he]). At a ferry crossing (渡口 [du kou]) where the river water flows rapidly, two thick cables (缆绳 [lan sheng]) are separately secured to both ends of the boat (船 [chuan]). The other ends of the ropes are then separately fixed to the ferry crossings (渡口 [du kou]) on both banks (两岸 [liang an]). When the ferryman (摆渡的人 [bai du de ren]) wishes to reach the other bank (彼岸 [bi an]), they pull the cable (缆绳 [lan sheng]) fixed to the other bank (彼岸 [bi an]), continuously pulling it in and tightening it. The boat (船 [chuan]) is then pulled towards the other bank (彼岸 [bi an]). When returning, they switch to pulling the other cable (缆绳 [lan sheng]), proceeding according to the direction.
