Natyashastra (theatrics and dramaturgy)
Source: Shodhganga: The significance of the mūla-beras (natya)Kūttanūl is a treatise on dance-drama and represents important piece of Tamil literature.—Kūttanūl or Kūttiyal is an ancient treatise on the art of dance. This is a unique and comprehensive treatise on the three fold arts of dance, music and drama. Atiyarkku Nallar and Nacinarkiniyar, the prose writers of Cilappatikāram[74] (an ancient Tamil epic poem) and Cīvakacintāmaṇi (a Jain epic poem) respectively, have mentioned Kūttanūl (a treatise on gesticulation in dancing) in their works. So it is clear that Kūttanūl is prior to Cilappatikāram and Cīvakacintāmaṇi.
Kūttanūl has nine major divisions and each division is called nūl (book). Each nūl is further divided into small parts with subtitles. Every subdivision provides many definitions of its own.
- Cuvai-nūl (book on production of aesthetics),
- Tokai-nūl (dictionary of dance forms)
- Vari-nūl (book on folk dances),
- Kalai-nūl (book on the dancing limbs),
- Karaṇa-nūl (book on the combination of dance gestures),
- Tāla-nūl (book on time measure) also called Tāla-Samutiram (ocean of tālas),
- Icai-nūl (book on music),
- Avai-nūl (book on theatre architecture),
- Kan-nūl (summation).
Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
