Source: archive.org: Jaina YogaKūṭalekhakaraṇa (कूटलेखकरण) refers to “spreading of false information” and represents one of the transgressions (aticāra) of the Satya-vrata (vow of truth).—Haribhadra (in his commentary on the Āvaśyaka-sūtra p821b) and in general the Śvetāmbara writers, understand by kūṭa-lekha-karaṇa the counterfeiting of another person’s seal, or stamp, or the use of such a seal with a false text, but Siddhasena Gaṇin (in his commentary on the Tattvārtha-sūtra verse 7.21) more specifically relates it to the false writing of symbols on birch bark.
The Digambara definition is “alleging in writing with intent to deceive that what was not in fact said or done by someone was said or done by him” (see Cāmuṇḍarāya’s Caritrasāra). Āśādhara (in his Sāgāra-dharmāmṛta verse 4.45) notes both the Śvetāmbara and Digambara versions. Abhayadeva (commentary on Haribhadra’s Śrāvaka-dharma-pañcāśaka), Hemacandra, and others say that this offence, though a flagrant breach of truth, is an aticāra and not a bhaṅga because the vrata in its literal sense applies to the speaking, and not to the writing, of a satya.
