Source: Shodhganga: The saurapurana - a critical studyKurukṣetratīrtha (कुरुक्षेत्रतीर्थ) or simply Kurukṣetra is the name of a Tīrtha (holy places) mentioned in the 10th century Saurapurāṇa: one of the various Upapurāṇas depicting Śaivism.—In Kurukṣetra-tīrtha there is the liṅga named Sthāṇu. Brahmā is said to have achieved brahmatva by undergoing penance at this tīrtha. The Vālakhilya sages got siddhi at this place.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
