Ṛgveda mentions a preparation in which the curds were mixed with Soma juice and barley meal. [...] Kauṭilya lays down that buttermilk should be given to the dogs and pigs, solid part of inspissated milk (kūrcikā) to the soldiers with the food and the liquid part (kilāṭa) to the cows with fodder.

Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanyKūrcikā (कूर्चिका) is a Sanskrit word referring to the “hedgehog”, the meat of which animal is part of the māṃsavarga (‘group of flesh’), which is used throughout Ayurvedic literature. The animal Kūrcikā is part of the sub-group named Bhūmiśaya, refering to animals “who sleep in burrows in earth”. It was classified by Caraka in his Carakasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna (chapter 27), a classical Ayurvedic work. Caraka defined such groups (vargas) based on the dietic properties of the substance.

Note: Kūrcikā (“condensed milk”) (v.l. kūcikā) is milk “whose constituent parts have turned viscid” (ghanāvayavam). For its pendant remains spri, which is unanimously defined as “cream”. Since pīyūṣa can have the same meaning, the equation in Mahāvyutpatti 5692 of pīyūṣa and spri-ma is still correct, all the more so because it is included there in a list of articles of food, in which pīyūṣa “beestings” would be quite out of place.
