Jyotisha (astronomy and astrology)
Source: Journal of South Asian Intellectual History: Samarasiṃha and the Early Transmission of Tājika AstrologyKṛṣṇapitta (कृष्णपित्त) refers to “black bile”, as discussed in the twelfth chapter of the Karmaprakāśa—one of the earliest preserved Sanskrit works on Perso-Arabic (Tājika) astrology authored by Samarasiṃha in the 13th century.—Chapter 12 (doṣa-adhikāra) is the longest chapter of the work, and is clearly based on Abū Bakr’s extensive list of astrological correlatives for various illnesses. Despite its length, the Karmaprakāśa chapter is only a partial summary of the material in the Kitab al-mawālīd, but the sequence of the material is largely the same, dealing in order with illnesses of the eyes, ears and tongue (including speech defects); etc. [...] Particular note may be made of the concept of ‘black bile’ (kṛṣṇapitta, 12.30), not found in pre-Islamic Indian medicine.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
