Krīḍ (क्रीड्).—1. P. (krīḍati, krīḍita)

1) To play, amuse oneself; वानराः क्रीडितुमारब्धाः (vānarāḥ krīḍitumārabdhāḥ) Pañcatantra (Bombay) 1; एष क्रीडति कूपयन्त्रघटिकान्यायप्रसक्तो विधिः (eṣa krīḍati kūpayantraghaṭikānyāyaprasakto vidhiḥ) Mṛcchakaṭika 1.59; जक्षन् क्रीडन् रममाणः (jakṣan krīḍan ramamāṇaḥ) Ch. Up.8.12.3.

-ā, -pari, -sam [Ā. krīḍo'nusaṃparibhyaśca P.I.3.21] to play &c.; संक्रीडन्ते मणिभिर्यत्र कन्याः (saṃkrīḍante maṇibhiryatra kanyāḥ) Meghadūta 69; but क्रीड् (krīḍ) with सं (saṃ) is Paras. in the sense of 'making a noise'; त्वन्नामवर्णा इव कर्णपीता मयास्य संक्रीडति चक्रचक्रे (tvannāmavarṇā iva karṇapītā mayāsya saṃkrīḍati cakracakre) N.3.5; संक्रीडन्ति शकटानि (saṃkrīḍanti śakaṭāni) Mahābhārata 'the carts creak'.

Kṛḍ (कृड्).—[kṛḍa] r. 6th cl. (kṛḍati) 1. To be thick or coarse, to be gross, to be solid. 2. To eat.

(ṛ) krīḍṛ (krīḍati) To play, to sport; with anu, ava, āṅ pari, or sam prefixed, it is deponent, as anukrīḍate, &c. unless anu requires the accusative case, and the compound with sam implies inarticulate sound, as tamanukrīḍati sā she plays with him, saṃkrīḍati cakraṃ the wheel creaks.
