Kṛ (कृ).—I. 5 U. (kṛṇoti-kṛṇute) To hurt, injure, kill. -II. 8 U. (karoti-kurute, cakāra-cakre, akārṣīt-akṛta; kartum, kariṣyati-te kṛta)

1) To do (in general); तात किं करवाण्यहम् (tāta kiṃ karavāṇyaham)

2) To make; गणिकामवरोधमकरोत् (gaṇikāmavarodhamakarot) Dk; नृपेण चक्रे युवराजशब्दभाक् (nṛpeṇa cakre yuvarājaśabdabhāk) R.3.35; युवराजः कृतः (yuvarājaḥ kṛtaḥ) &c.

This root is often used with nouns, adjectives, and indeclinables to form verbs from them, somewhat like the English affixes 'en' or '(i) fy', in the sense of 'making a person or thing to be what it previously is not'; e. g. कृष्णीकृ (kṛṣṇīkṛ) to make that which is not already black, black, i. e. blacken; so श्वेतीकृ (śvetīkṛ) to whiten; घनीकृ (ghanīkṛ) to solidify; विरलीकृ (viralīkṛ) to rarefy &c. &c. Sometimes these formations take place in other senses also; e. g. क्रोडीकृ (kroḍīkṛ) 'to clasp to the bosom', embrace; भस्मीकृ (bhasmīkṛ) to reduce to ashes; प्रवणीकृ (pravaṇīkṛ) to incline, bend; तृणीकृ (tṛṇīkṛ) to value as little as straw; मन्दीकृ (mandīkṛ) to slacken, make slow; so शूलीकृ (śūlīkṛ) to roast on the end of pointed lances; सुखीकृ (sukhīkṛ) to please' समयाकृ (samayākṛ) to spend time &c. N. B.- This root by itself admits of either Pada; but it is Ātm. generally with prepositions in the following senses :--(1) doing injury to; (2) censure, blame; (3) serving; (4) outraging, acting violently or rashly; (5) preparing, changing the condition of, turning into; (6) reciting; (7) employing, using; see P.I.3.32 and गन्धनावक्षेपणसेवनसाहसिक्यप्रतियत्नप्रकथनोपयोगेषु कृञः (gandhanāvakṣepaṇasevanasāhasikyapratiyatnaprakathanopayogeṣu kṛñaḥ) ''Students' Guide to Sanskrit Composition" 338. Very rarely in Veda ([Atharva-veda xviii, 2, 27]), but commonly in the Brāhmaṇas, Sūtras, and especially in classical Sanskṛt the perf. forms cakāra and cakre auxiliarily used to form the periphrastical perfect of verbs, especially of causatives e.g. āsāṃ cakre, ‘he sat down’;—gamayāṃ cakāra, ‘he caused to go’ see, [Pāṇini 3-1, 40]; in Veda some other forms of √kṛ are used in a similar way, viz. pr. karoti, [Śāṅkhāyana-śrauta-sūtra]; [imperfect tense] akar, [Maitrāyaṇī-saṃhitā] and, [Kāṭhaka]; 3. [plural] akran, [Maitrāyaṇī-saṃhitā] and, [Taittirīya-brāhmaṇa]; Prec. kriyāt, [Maitrāyaṇī-saṃhitā] (See, [Pāṇini 3-1, 42]); according to, [Pāṇini 3-1, 41], also karotu with √vid.—[Causal] kārayati, te, to cause to act or do, cause another to perform, have anything made or done by another (double [accusative] [instrumental case] and [accusative] see, [Pāṇini 1-4, 53] e.g. sabhāṃ kāritavān, he caused an assembly to be made, [Hitopadeśa]; rāja-darśanaṃ māṃ kāraya, cause me to have an audience of the king; vāṇijyaṃ kārayed vaiśyam, he ought to cause the Vaiśya to engage in trade, [Manu-smṛti viii, 410]; na śakṣyāmi kiṃcit kārayituṃ tvayā, I shall not be able to have anything done by thee, [Mahābhārata ii, 6]);

—to cause to place or put, have anything placed, put upon, etc. (e.g. taṃ citrapaṭaṃ vāsa-gṛhe bhittāv akārayat, he had the picture placed on the wall in his house, [Kathāsaritsāgara v, 30]), [Manu-smṛti viii, 251]. Sometimes the [Causal] of √kṛ is used for the simple verb or without a causal signification (e.g. padaṃ kārayati, he pronounces a word, [Pāṇini 1-3, 71; Kāśikā-vṛtti] ; mithyā k, he pronounces wrongly, [ib.]; kaikeyīm anu rājānaṃ kāraya, treat or deal with Kaikeyī as the king does, [Rāmāyaṇa ii, 58, 16]) :—[Desiderative] cikīrṣati ([Aorist] 2. sg. acikīrṣīs, [Śatapatha-brāhmaṇa iii]), [Epic] also te, to wish to make or do, intend to do, design, intend, begin, strive after, [Atharva-veda xii, 4, 19; Śatapatha-brāhmaṇa; Kātyāyana-śrauta-sūtra; Manu-smṛti] etc.;
