Kovākīya (कोवाकीय) refers to a type of fish identified with Pseudosciaena sina C., as mentioned in the 12th-century Mānasollāsa or Abhilaṣitārthachintāmaṇi, an ancient Sanskrit text describing thirty-five kinds of marine and fresh water fishes.—Kovakiya is an inland, scaly, and large fish. In Sanskrit kuvaak means a bad utterance, which would indicate a fish belonging to croakers, etc. Hora (1951) tentatively suggested that kovakiya could be Polynemous tetradactyles Shaw. We believe kovakiya fits in better with the fish known to be common in Mumbai area, Pseudosciaena sina C., which is a croaker.
