叩髑髏知生處 [kou du lou zhi sheng chu]—Tapping a Skull to Know One's Rebirth Place
[Story] Pañcavaggika Vinaya (五分律 [wu fen lu]), Chapter 20, states: "Jīvaka (耆域 [qi yu]) could discern the origin and outcome of sounds. The Buddha (佛 [fu]) led him to a graveyard (塚間 [zhong jian]) and showed him five skulls (髑髏 [du lou]). Jīvaka tapped each one and said to the Buddha: 'The first one tapped was reborn in hell (地獄 [de yu]), the second in the realm of hungry ghosts (餓鬼 [e gui]), the third as an animal (畜生 [chu sheng]), the fourth in the human realm (人道 [ren dao]), and the fifth in the heavens (天上 [tian shang]).' The Buddha said, 'Excellent, it is all as you have said.' He then showed him another skull, and Jīvaka tapped it three times but did not know where it had gone. He said to the Buddha: 'I do not know where this person was reborn.' The Buddha said: 'You should not know. Why? This is the skull of an Arhat (羅漢 [luo han]), who has no place of rebirth (無有生處 [wu you sheng chu]).'"
Also, Ekottara Āgama (增一阿含經 [zeng yi a han jing]), Chapter 20 (Chapter on Śrāvakas (聲聞品 [sheng wen pin])), states that the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) led the Brahmin (梵志 [fan zhi]) named Mṛgashiras (鹿頭 [lu tou]) to a graveyard, took a skull, and gave it to him, saying: "You are renowned for your knowledge of constellations (明星宿 [ming xing su]) and can discern the causes of death (死之因緣 [si zhi yin yuan]). Now I ask you, who is this? Male or female? What illness caused their death (命終 [ming zhong])? And where did they go after death?" At that time, the Brahmin took the skull, observed it repeatedly, and struck it with his hand, saying: "This is a male. This person died from a collection of illnesses causing pain in all joints. After death, this person fell into the three evil realms (三惡趣 [san e qu])." The Buddha said: "As you have said." He then took another skull and gave it to him. The Brahmin struck it and answered each question. At that time, to the south of Gandhamādana (香山 [xiang shan]), there was a Bhikkhu (比丘 [bi qiu]) named Udayana (優陀延 [you tuo yan]) who had entered the realm of parinirvana (無餘涅槃界 [wu yu nie pan jie]). The World-Honored One extended his arm, took his skull, and gave it to the Brahmin, asking him. The Brahmin struck it again with his hand and said to the World-Honored One: "I observe this skull to be neither male nor female; I see no birth (不見生 [bu jian sheng]), no cessation (不見斷 [bu jian duan]), no coming and going (不見周旋往來 [bu jian zhou xuan wang lai]). The reason is that observing the eight directions (八方 [ba fang]) and above and below, there is no sound (都無音響 [dou wu yin xiang]) at all." The World-Honored One told him, "Stop, stop, Brahmin, you truly do not recognize it. This skull has no end and no beginning (無終無始 [wu zhong wu shi]), no birth and no death (無生死 [wu sheng si]). There is also no place in the eight directions, above or below, for it to go. This is the skull of an Arhat who has attained parinirvana (阿羅漢之取無餘涅槃界者 [a luo han zhi qu wu yu nie pan jie zhe])." The Brahmin then exclaimed, "Never before!" became a disciple (弟子 [di zi]), and subsequently attained Arhatship (阿羅漢果 [a luo han guo]).
Mohe Zhiguan (止觀 [zhi guan]), Chapter 7 (part 2), states: "Non-Buddhists (外道 [wai dao]) strike skulls to make sounds, listening as if to their place of rebirth, thereby knowing countless things."
叩髑髏知生處—【故事】五分律二十曰:「耆域能別音聲本末之相,佛將至塚間,示五人髑髏。耆域徧叩白佛言:第一叩者生地獄,第二叩者生餓鬼,第三叩者生畜生,第四叩者生人道,第五叩者生天上。佛言善哉皆如汝所說,復示一髑髏,耆域三叩不知所之。白佛言:我不知此人所生之處。佛言:汝應不知。何以故?此是羅漢髑髏,無有生處。」又增一阿含經二十(聲聞品)謂世尊將鹿頭梵志至塚間,取髑髏與之曰:汝明星宿,能知死之因緣。今我問汝,此是何人?男耶女耶?復由何病而取命終?死至於何處?是時梵志取髑髏,反覆觀察,以手擊之曰:是為男子。是眾病集而百節酸痛,取命終。此人命終墮於三惡趣。佛曰:如汝所言。更取髑髏與之。梵志打之,一一答之。爾時香山之南,有優陀延比丘,入於無餘涅槃界。世尊申臂取其髑髏,與梵志而問之。梵志復以手擊之。白世尊言:我觀此髑髏非男非女,亦不見生。亦不見斷。亦不見周旋往來。所以然者。觀八方上下,都無音響。世尊告之曰止止,梵志汝竟不識之。此髑髏無終無始,亦無生死。亦無八方上下可適之所。此是阿羅漢之取無餘涅槃界者。梵志即嘆未曾有,為弟子,遂證阿羅漢果。止觀七下曰:「外道打髑髏作聲,聽如生處,知無量事。」
