Speaks not fluently, often characterized by the repetition of sounds or broken phrases/sentences. Book of Han (《漢書 [han shu]》), Vol. 87, "Biography of Yang Xiong (Part 1)" (《揚雄傳上 [yang xiong chuan shang]》): "He was a simple, uninhibited, and unrestrained person. He stuttered and could not engage in lively conversation. He preferred quiet, profound thought, was serene and inactive (清靜無為 [qing jing wu wei]), and had few desires." Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三國演義 [san guo yan yi]》), Chapter 107: "Deng Ai (艾 [ai]) stuttered; whenever he reported to the emperor, he would always say, 'Ai... Ai...'" Also known as "結巴 [jie ba]" (stammering/stuttering).
