khista (खिस्त).—f ( A) An instalment. 2 Payment by instalments. 3 The period or term of an instalment. Ex. khista bharalyānantara rupayē rāhilē tara vyāja paḍēla. 4 It expresses various ruinous ways of borrowing money: viz. Rendering back the principal borrowed and paying the interest accrued in the evening of each day:--rendering daily together with the interest a portion of the principal, continuing to pay interest for the whole sum borrowed until the full repayment be effected:--paying daily such a sum and for such a term that the aggregate of the daily payments shall exceed, by a half, a fourth &c., the sum borrowed. 5 fig. A division of a business or a distinct article to be attended to. With implication of there being many such, and thus of vexatiousness or tiresomeness. khista therefore is used and is explained as A vexation; a teasing or troublesome affair. Ex. hēṃ khistīcēṃ kāma āhē; hā khistīcā rōja- gāra; hā khistīcā svēmpāka. 6 fig. A particular, point, item, head. With the implication of Pretence, pretext, false plea. Ex. hā pāṭīla hajāra khistīnēṃ chaḷatō. khistīcā Consisting of many divisions or distinct heads or articles: hence troublesome, tiresome, teasing, vexing--a business or an affair.
