Khar (खर्).—The pratyāhāra खर् (khar) standing for hard consonants viz. the first and second letters of the five classes and the sibilants, before which, स् (s) at the end of a word becomes विसर्ग (visarga), and soft consonants i. e. the third and fourth consonants of the five classes become hard; cf. खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीय (kharavasānayorvisarjanīya); P. VIII.3.15, and खरि च (khari ca) P. VIII.4.55
