Khaṇḍālipa (खण्डालिप) refers to a type of fish identified with Mastacembelus armatus Lacel., as mentioned in the 12th-century Mānasollāsa or Abhilaṣitārthachintāmaṇi, an ancient Sanskrit text describing thirty-five kinds of marine and fresh water fishes.—Khandalipa is an inland, scaly, and medium-sized fish. The root of the word khandalipa can be traced in Sanskrit; khanda means broken and lipa means to cover or overspread. Hora (1951) suggested the name Mastacembelus armatus Lacel. with which we agree. It is a spiny eel.
