Source: Shodhganga: Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (ns)Khaṇḍadhārālaya (खण्डधारालय) (see Khaṇḍadhārā) refers to a particular Laya identified with cūrṇapada.—See Abhinavabhāratī, Commentary on Nāṭyaśāstra 12.89-91 (GOS Vol. II, p.148).—Bharata describes the gait to be adopted by a person enacting the riding of a chariot. Abhinava explains that the word ‘cūrṇapada’ which means short or quick steps, is to be understood as the khaṇḍadhārālaya which has many drutas and ends with a guru. [...] Kavi gives Nānyadeva’s definition of khaṇḍadhārā in his work Bharatakośa (1999, p. 160): Nānyadeva says that a druta followed by a druta-virāma and four laghus repeated twice will form the khaṇḍadhārālaya.

Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
