Matchmaker. From "Qionglin for Young Learners" (《幼學瓊林 [you xue qiong lin]》), Volume 2, "Marriage" (婚姻類 [hun yin lei]): "Jiǎn Xiū (蹇修 [jian xiu]) and Kē Rén are both terms for matchmakers (媒妁 [mei shuo])."

1. A person traveling away from home. From 《初刻拍案驚奇 [chu ke pai an jing qi]》 (Chū Kè Pāi Àn Jīng Qí), Volume 18: "I saw a distant traveler, a '远来 [yuan lai]' (yuǎnlai kèrén), resting in the pavilion next door, who had brought his family, his '家眷 [jia juan]' (jiājuàn), to tour the lake."
2. A merchant doing business away from home. From 《三國演義 [san guo yan yi]》 (Sān Guó Yǎn Yì), Chapter 1: "Someone reported that two merchants, '' (kèrén), leading a group of partners, '伙伴 [huo ban]' (huǒbàn), and driving a herd of horses, '马 [ma]' (mǎ), were coming towards the manor." From 《石點頭 [shi dian tou]．卷八 [juan ba]．貪婪漢六院賣風流 [tan lan han liu yuan mai feng liu]》 (Shí Diǎn Tóu, Volume 8, Greedy Man Sells Romance in Six Courtyards): "The other day, a merchant, a '' (kèrén), had a small boat loaded with some cloth, '布匹 [bu pi]' (bùpǐ). Being greedy for small gains, he didn't go to pay taxes, '投稅 [tou shui]' (tóu shuì), and went directly through Zhangjia Bridge to pass the customs."
3. A customer; someone who comes to do business. From 《文明小史 [wen ming xiao shi]》 (Wén Míng Xiǎo Shǐ), Chapter 30: "Although the courtesans, '妓女 [ji nu]' (jìnǚ), flattered their customers, '' (kèrén), some with good looks, no matter how much the customer, '' (kèrén), urged them to call more people or drink more wine, would still maintain some dignity."
4. A guest; someone who is invited and entertained. From 《老殘遊記 [lao can you ji]》 (Lǎo Cán Yóu Jì), Chapter 8: "Hurry and cook, the guest, '' (kèrén), is hungry."
5. An alternative name for the Hakka people. See the entry for "客家人 [ke jia ren]" (Kèjiārén). From the poem (Sòng Nǚdì) by 清 [qing]．黃遵憲 [huang zun xian] (Qīng. Huáng Zūnxiàn): "There was an old clan in the Central Plains, '中原 [zhong yuan]' (Zhōngyuán), who migrated and were called '' (kèrén)."

4.賓客。接受邀請、受到招待的人。《老殘遊記》第八回：「趕緊做飯，客人餓了。」

2. chū wài jīng shāng de shēng yì rén. < sān guó yǎn yì> dì yī huí: “rén bào yǒu liǎng gè kè rén, yǐn yī huǒ bàn dàng, gǎn yī qún mǎ, tóu zhuāng shàng lái.” < shí diǎn tóu． juǎn bā． tān lán hàn liù yuàn mài fēng liú>: “qián rì yǒu gè kè rén, yī zhǐ xiǎo chuán, zhuāng le xiē bù pǐ, yī shí tān xiǎo, bù qù tóu shuì, jìng cóng zhāng jiā qiáo zhuǎn guān.”
3. gù kè. shàng mén zuò jiāo yì de rén. < wén míng xiǎo shǐ> dì sān○huí: “jì nǚ suī rán fèng chéng kè rén, rán ér yǒu xiē xiāng mào hǎo de, wú lùn kè rén duō jiào rén duō chī jiǔ, zǒng hái yào ná diǎn shēn fēn chū lái.”
