2. A merchant doing business away from home. From 《三國演義 [san guo yan yi]》 (Sān Guó Yǎn Yì), Chapter 1: "Someone reported that two merchants, '' (kèrén), leading a group of partners, '伙伴 [huo ban]' (huǒbàn), and driving a herd of horses, '马 [ma]' (mǎ), were coming towards the manor." From 《石點頭 [shi dian tou].卷八 [juan ba].貪婪漢六院賣風流 [tan lan han liu yuan mai feng liu]》 (Shí Diǎn Tóu, Volume 8, Greedy Man Sells Romance in Six Courtyards): "The other day, a merchant, a '' (kèrén), had a small boat loaded with some cloth, '布匹 [bu pi]' (bùpǐ). Being greedy for small gains, he didn't go to pay taxes, '投稅 [tou shui]' (tóu shuì), and went directly through Zhangjia Bridge to pass the customs."
3. A customer; someone who comes to do business. From 《文明小史 [wen ming xiao shi]》 (Wén Míng Xiǎo Shǐ), Chapter 30: "Although the courtesans, '妓女 [ji nu]' (jìnǚ), flattered their customers, '' (kèrén), some with good looks, no matter how much the customer, '' (kèrén), urged them to call more people or drink more wine, would still maintain some dignity."
4. A guest; someone who is invited and entertained. From 《老殘遊記 [lao can you ji]》 (Lǎo Cán Yóu Jì), Chapter 8: "Hurry and cook, the guest, '' (kèrén), is hungry."
