客家人 [kè jiā rén] [ke jia ren]—
During the Eastern Jin Dynasty (東晉 [dong jin]) and the period of the Five Barbarians Uprising (五胡亂華 [wu hu luan hua]), residents originally from areas like Shanxi (山西 [shan xi]), Shaanxi (陝西 [shan xi]), Henan (河南 [he nan]), and Anhui (安徽 [an hui]) collectively migrated south due to invasions by the Jurchen people (女真人 [nu zhen ren]) and Mongols (蒙古人 [meng gu ren]). During the process of developing Jiangnan (江南 [jiang nan]), they often clashed with the indigenous people. Consequently, local governments referred to the original inhabitants, such as the She people (畬 [she]) and Yao people (傜 [yao]), as "Zhu Ji" (主籍 [zhu ji]), meaning 'native households,' and the Han people (漢人 [han ren]) who migrated from the north as "Ke Ji" (客籍 [ke ji]), meaning 'guest households.' This distinction between 'native' (Zhu) and 'guest' (Ke) is the origin of the current name Hakka (客家 [ke jia]). The Hakka people are mostly distributed in the border regions of Fujian (福建 [fu jian]), Jiangxi (江西 [jiang xi]), Hunan (湖南 [hu nan]), and Guangdong (廣東 [guang dong]), as well as in several counties in Guangxi (廣西 [guang xi]) and Sichuan (四川 [si chuan]). Today, residents of Taiwan's (臺灣 [tai wan]) Pingtung (屏東 [ping dong]), Kaohsiung (高雄 [gao xiong]), Hsinchu (新竹 [xin zhu]), and Miaoli (苗栗 [miao li]) counties who migrated from Guangdong (廣東 [guang dong]) are also referred to as "Hakka people". The Hakka people maintain their customs and traditions in their concentrated settlements, are diligent and proactive, and their folk songs (shan'ge) have a unique style. Their language retains a large number of Chinese language (漢語 [han yu]) phonological features.
