Composition between haggling purchasers and venders by abatement of the demand and advancement of the offer: also a considerate settlement and mitigation of the claims against an embarrassed trader &c. reducing to a mean or medium, or dividing amongst according to a proportion; averaging: also interchanging (of an article, a work, a business); bartering: also exchanging one (article &c.) for another; commutation. 2 Contriving or managing roguishly or cleverly; business-craft, policy, strategy, intrigue, finesse &c.
