Source: WorldCat: Rāj nighaṇṭuKaṭvī (कट्वी) is the Sanskrit name for a medicinal plant possibly identified with Picrorhiza kurroa (kutki) from the Plantaginaceae or “plantain” family of flowering plants, according to verse 3.139-140 of the 13th-century Raj Nighantu or Rājanighaṇṭu. Notes: Vaidyaka Śabda Sindhu identifies Kaṭvī with Kaṭukī (Picrorhiza kurroa), which on account of its laxative role does not tally with the Kaṭvī of the Raj Nighantu.
Kaṭvī is mentioned as having eight synonyms: Kaṭukavallī, Sukāṣṭhā, Kāṣṭhavallikā, Suvallī, Mahāvallī, Paśumohanikā and Kaṭu.
Properties and characteristics: “Kaṭvī is pungent and cold. It relieves cough, asthma and pain. It is a febrifuge for various types of fevers. It is an appetizer and a cure for tuberculosis”.
