Kāryakāraṇe (कार्यकारणे).—(dual)

1) cause and effect; object and motive; °वर्जितः (varjitaḥ) Pañcatantra (Bombay) 1.413.

2) some special cause of an act; न भक्त्या कस्यचित्कोऽपि प्रियं प्रकुरुते नरः । मुक्त्वा भयं प्रलोभं वा कार्यकारणमेव वा (na bhaktyā kasyacitko'pi priyaṃ prakurute naraḥ | muktvā bhayaṃ pralobhaṃ vā kāryakāraṇameva vā) || Pañcatantra (Bombay) 1.412 °भावः (bhāvaḥ) the relation of cause and effect. °saṃbandhaḥ The relation of cause and effect. In मीमांसा (mīmāṃsā) this is established by the rule of अन्वयव्यतिरेक (anvayavyatireka) (i. e. tadbhāve bhāvaḥ tadabhāve abhāvaḥ) The earliest exposition of this expression is found in the शाबरभाष्य (śābarabhāṣya) on MS.4.3.2; cf. कार्यकारणसम्बन्धो नाम स भवति, यस्मिन् सति यद् भवति यस्मिंश्चासति यन्न भवति, तत्रैव कार्य- कारणसंबन्धः (kāryakāraṇasambandho nāma sa bhavati, yasmin sati yad bhavati yasmiṃścāsati yanna bhavati, tatraiva kārya- kāraṇasaṃbandhaḥ) | This should be contrasted with the नैयायिक (naiyāyika) view of अन्वय-व्यतिरेक (anvaya-vyatireka) which they use for establishing व्याप्ति (vyāpti).

Kāryakāraṇe is a Sanskrit compound consisting of the terms kārya and kāraṇe (कारणे).

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
