(Mammaṭa says that here karṇa means karṇaṃsthitatva; cf. also his remark ad hoc:- karṇāvataṃsādipade karṇādidhvaninirmitaḥ | sannidhānārthabodhārthaṃ sthiteṣveta- tsamarthanam || K. P.7).
