1) [noun] law a) all the rules of conduct established and enforced by the authority, legislation or custom of a given community, state or other group b) any one of such rules.
2) [noun] the condition existing when obedience to such rules is general (as in kānūnu mattu suvyavaste).
3) [noun] the branch of knowledge dealing with such rules; jurisprudence.
4) [noun] the system of dispensation of justice as per the llaws of the land (as in 'kānūnannu ninna kaige ettikoḷḷabēḍa); ಕಾನೂನನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊ [kanunannu kaige tegeduko] kanūnannu kaige tegeduko (fig.) to resort to get justice by using force, and not involving the police or judicial system of the state.
