It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words kaṇṭaka (‘thorn’ or ‘needle’) and pañcamūla, translating to “five roots”.
The five plants are
- Karamarda,
- Trikaṇṭaka,
- Saireyaka,
- Śātāvarī,
- Gṛdhranakhi.
The collection of herbs named Kaṇṭakapañcamūla is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
