The name is derived from the word kaṇḍu, translating to “itching”. It is a technical term used throughout Āyurveda. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Candana (Red sandal), Nalada (Nardostachys jatamansi), Naktamāla (Galedupa indica), Nimva (Melia azadirachta). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
