Kalkeri is an archaeologically important site situated in Hangal-taluk (Dharwar district), known for inscriptions regarding the ancient history of India. For example, at Kalkeri there is a slab fixed into the wall of the temple of sun-god which records the gift of the sthāna of the Jayasiṃgeśvara temple of Kalukere by Rājaguru Amareśvaradeva, the āchārya of god Īśvara of Hānuṃgal to his disciple Mallikārjuna-Paṇḍita. Also records gifts of lands and other incomes by the local merchants, residents and members of the trading organisation. This inscription belongs to king Siṃhaṇa of the Yādava dynasty and is dated Year 34, Śubhakṛt, Phālguṇa (1243 A.C., March 22)
