A withered and dry (枯乾 [ku gan]) appearance. From He Jingming's (何景明 [he jing ming]) 'Ode to Drought' (憂旱賦 [you han fu]) of the Ming (明 [ming]) Dynasty: "The mountains (山 [shan]) are high and barren with a reddish hue (赬顏 [cheng yan]), and the fields (野 [ye]) are desolate (蕭條 [xiao tiao]) and devoid of color (無色 [wu se])."

1. Appearance of sighing (感嘆 [gan tan]) or lamenting. From Chu Ci (楚辭 [chu ci]). Liu Xiang (劉向 [liu xiang]). Nine Laments (九歎 [jiu tan]). Far Gone (遠逝 [yuan shi]): "My feelings (情 [qing]) are deeply sorrowful and long-cherished (長懷 [zhang huai]), trusting the Supreme Sovereign (上皇 [shang huang]) to seek rectification (質正 [zhi zheng])."
2. Emotions (情緒 [qing xu]) are agitated (激動 [ji dong]) and high-spirited (高昂 [gao ang]). From Jin Dynasty (晉 [jin]). Pan Yue (潘岳 [pan yue]). Elegy for Ma Qiandu (馬汧督誄 [ma qian du lei]): "Resolute Master Ma (馬生 [ma sheng]), with a clear and lofty demeanor (琅琅高致 [lang lang gao zhi])."
