倶舍宗 [ju she zong]—The Abhidharma or Piṭaka School.
[The following represents an unverified English translation. For all purposes consult the original Chinese text.]
俱舍宗 [ju she zong]—Kusha School — [School] One of the Eight Schools (八宗 [ba zong]). It is based on the principles of the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra (俱舍論 [ju she lun]). Indian Hinayana (印度小乘 [yin du xiao cheng]) was divided into eighteen schools (十八部 [shi ba bu]), with various differing views. At the beginning of 400 years after the Tathāgata's (如來 [ru lai]) passing, five hundred Arhats, at the invitation of King Kanishka (迦膩色迦王 [jia ni se jia wang]) of the Gandhara Kingdom (健駄羅國 [jian tuo luo guo]), compiled the Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra (大毘婆沙論 [da pi po sha lun]) in 200 fascicles, thereby establishing the doctrines of the Sarvāstivāda (薩婆多部 [sa po duo bu]) among the eighteen schools. This treatise explains the Jñānaprasthāna-śāstra (發智論 [fa zhi lun]) based on the principles of the Six Pāda-śāstras (六足論 [liu zu lun]). Therefore, the main principles of this school are integrated herein.
Five hundred years later, Bodhisattva Vasubandhu (世親菩薩 [shi qin pu sa]) appeared. He first renounced his home in the Sarvāstivāda school and studied its doctrines. Later, he studied the Sautrāntika (經量部 [jing liang bu]) school and felt some dissatisfaction with his own school. Consequently, he composed the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra based on the Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra, occasionally criticizing it with the views of the Sautrāntika school. Therefore, from the perspective of the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra's true intent, it is a work that selects and synthesizes, forming a new framework outside the eighteen schools. However, since it was composed based on the Vibhāṣā-śāstra, incorporating its essential meaning without omission (hence it is said to "comprehend its supreme meaning," as seen below the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra in the preceding section), it is thus classified as belonging to the Sarvāstivāda school.
In India, this treatise was called the Treatise on Wisdom (聰明論 [cong ming lun]). People both inside and outside the Buddhist community studied it together. In China (支那 [zhi na]), during the Chen Dynasty (陳 [chen]), Tripiṭaka Paramārtha (真諦三藏 [zhen di san cang]) first translated it, calling it the Kusha Yilun (俱舍譯論 [ju she yi lun]). Later, during the Tang Dynasty (唐 [tang]), Xuanzang (玄奘 [xuan zang]) re-translated it, calling it the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra (俱舍論 [ju she lun]). His disciples, the two masters Guangbao (光寶 [guang bao]), each wrote commentaries in thirty fascicles. It greatly benefited scholars.
